Common Terms

There is an amassing list of acronyms and jargon in the online advertising language.

Here are some of the more common ones used for online campaigns:

The Acronyms

CPM

Cost per Thousand. This is a standard cost increment for charging the rate for impressions.

CTR

Click Thru Rate. The total percentage rate of clicks to impressions.

CPD

Cost Per Day. A cost structure for charging online advertising.

ROS

Or RON. Run of Site (Network). A display banner to be placed throughout the entire network of a website as opposed to a certain section.

CPA

Cost Per Acquisition. An ‘acquisition' is defined by the marketer. CPA is a method to pay for online advertising by the means of paying for only when a customer/sale/acquisition is made.

CPC

Cost Per Click. A cost structure option for online campaigns where the charges occur only when a click on the online tool.

PCA

Post Click Activity. Behaviour and activity which is monitored on the website after a viewer click on the online tool and arrives to the landing page.

SEM

Search Engine Marketing. An online advertising medium where keywords are utilized in search engine sites such as Google.

IAB

Interactive Advertising Bureau. A trade association which was established for the online industry. Individuals and Companies who are members of the IAB practice global standards for online advertising. A banner size for example, maybe an IAB standard size.

eDM

Electronic Direct Marketing. AKA Email Marketing.
The Jargon

Impression

A single viewing of an online advert display.

Page View

A viewing on a website portal via a user's browser.

Traffic

The rate of visits on a website. Normally measured on a monthly basis.

Rich Media

A term used to describe any type of online tools which uses dynamics such as flash, sound or video etc.
